MICROBLADING FAQ’S

Where do I begin?

Before you book your microblading reservation, J Michael’s requires a free, 15-minute consultation. Any questions you may have will be addressed during this consultation, as well as what the process itself is like, your goals, post-care and how to prepare before your reservation. Your consultation must be at least 48 hours in advance to your microblading session. If you decide to move forward with your microblading reservation after your consultation, a $100 deposit is required to hold your spot. This amount will go towards your final total. J Michael’s requires at least two weeks notice to cancel a microblading reservation in order to refund your full deposit.

Am I a candidate?

Our technicians work on all brow types, from no brows at all to thick brows that are just need some definition. We can even work on top of old permanent makeup, although this is a case-by-case situation.
Candidates must be 18 years of age and cannot be currently pregnant or nursing. Individuals taking certain types of blood thinners are required to have a doctors note before booking. If the skin of the brow is compromised in any way (scars, active acne, psoriasis, moles, etc.), the technician will have to observe and determine eligibility at your consultation.

How much does it cost?

The consultation is free, the non-refundable booking fee is $100 and the initial microblading session is $300. A $150 touch-up is highly recommended and should be scheduled for 6-8 weeks prior to the initial session. A 12 – 24 month touch-up is also recommended and is $300.

How long does it take?

An initial session lasts three – four hours. Touch up sessions take one hour.

Does it hurt?

At the start of a session, a mild numbing agent will be applied to the brow area. Your technician will then make about 15 hair strokes in the skin, which takes only a minute. Most individuals find it just mildly uncomfortable. A much stronger numbing agent is then applied to the broken skin area that was made with the initial 15 hair strokes. After this is completed you wont feel a thing.

How long does it last?

New brows can last anywhere from six months to a year and a half, depending on various factors. Since the ink is inserted into the skin only one layer beneath the surface, this makes microblading only semi-permanent. The most important factor that will determine the lifespan of the brows is how closely aftercare instructions are followed in the days after the procedure. Skin type also plays a role in brow life. Tougher skin types are more resistant and will fade more quickly. Individuals who frequently sweat profusely or tan often will also be on the shorter end of longevity.

What is post-care like?

Brows will go through a process called a “wet heal.” After the session is complete, your brows will need to be cleansed every hour. During the following seven days, brows will need to be cleansed five times a day. This will keep them from drying up, crusting or scabbing. Since the ink is only one level of skin beneath the surface, scabbing could absorb the ink and shed away with the skin. Following your aftercare instructions and keeping your brows cleansed as scheduled will not only prevent scabbing from occurring, but will also keep hair strokes crisp and precise. Your technician will give you a very detailed instruction sheet on how to care for your new brows following your reservation. Please avoid direct sun and excessive sweating for a minimum of two weeks prior to the procedure. After your session is complete, your technician cannot touch your brows again until they are completely and fully healed. Touch up sessions are usually scheduled six weeks after the initial session.

What will healing look like?

Your brows will be ready for their debut immediately after you leave your session, but will change in the 10 days following your procedure. Pigment will look a bit darker on some days and a bit lighter on others while new skin is developing over the top of your strokes. The healing process is wearable, however at no point should they be scabbed. Dryness and itchiness are normal while the brows are adjusting and healing, but after about day 12, they have resurfaced, softened and settled into a much more gradient, daytime brow. Your technician will provide you with a healing chart that will show each stage the brows will go through following your session.

What is needed for post-care?

Four things are needed for post-care. For post-cleaning, a gentle, unscented soap (Cetaphil, unscented orange dial, a natural baby shampoo), a bottle of distilled water (a bottle of Smart water), and cotton rounds are needed. Your technician will provide you with the fourth item – a healing ointment. The ointment contains beeswax, so please inform your technician if you are allergic to bees or honey. Please use only this ointment, never Vaseline or other products, as they will smother the brows. For your convenience, make sure to carry small travel size bottles of the distilled water and soap to use during healing. During the first 10 days of healing, these are the only four things that should touch your brows. You can use your regular facial cleanser but avoid your brow area during your healing time. No makeup should be applied to the brows during healing (and shouldn’t be needed), however can be applied around the area. Make sure to clean any makeup brushes and sponges to avoid bacteria coming in contact with the brows.

How do I choose a color?

Your technician will work with you to find your perfect color. Ink color will be matched to your brow color, not your hair color, in order to blend with your natural brows. Guests with very blonde hair can even be matched. All ink colors are neutral-toned, and will not be too warm or too cool for any guest.

How is brow shape determined?

A technique called Phi ratio, or Golden Ratio, is used, which measures facial features to find the mathematic ratios that lead to the most flattering size and shape customized just for you. This ratio is also known as “divine proportions,” and can be found in art, music, architecture, flowers, poetry and even the stock market. It has been regarded for centuries as the perfect ratio. Your technician will review your ratio shape and adjust if needed.

What type of instruments are used?

Our technicians use a small, disposable pen to make the hair strokes. There is no machine, wires or blade. The pen has tightly packed prongs on the end, which is what creates the hair-like strokes into the skin.

What is your training?

J Michael’s technicians are trained under Phi Brows, the most reputable microblading academy in America and Europe. Carrie Minotti began her microblading journey in Miami with a lengthy and intensive 11 level training process. This helped to perfect her precise craft before receiving her official certification.
